Learning target: A fraction describes equal parts of a whole or equal parts in a set. Equivalent fractions name the same amount.
STEP 01
Equal parts matter
The denominator tells how many equal-sized parts make up the whole. The numerator tells how many of those parts are being counted.
Example
If a shape is divided into four equal regions and three are shaded, 3/4 of the shape is shaded.
STEP 02
Equivalent fractions
Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number to create an equivalent fraction.
2/3 = 4/6 = 8/12
STEP 03
Comparing fractions
Use benchmarks, common denominators, or cross-products to compare fractions.
Example
3/5 ? 4/7
3 × 7 = 21 and 4 × 5 = 20. Because 21 > 20, 3/5 > 4/7.
STEP 04
Practice your reasoning
Try it: Is 6/8 equal to 3/4?
Yes. Divide 6 and 8 by 2 to get 3/4.
