Properties of Exponents

Exponent rules help rewrite repeated multiplication efficiently. These examples assume nonzero bases where division is involved.

Learning target: Exponent rules help rewrite repeated multiplication efficiently. These examples assume nonzero bases where division is involved.

STEP 01
Product of powers

When multiplying powers with the same base, add exponents.

x3 × x4 = x7

STEP 02
Quotient of powers

When dividing powers with the same nonzero base, subtract exponents.

a8 ÷ a3 = a5

STEP 03
Power of a power

When raising a power to another power, multiply exponents.

(m2)4 = m8

STEP 04
Power of a product

Apply the exponent to each factor inside the parentheses.

(xy)3 = x3y3

STEP 05
Zero exponent

Any nonzero number raised to the zero power equals one.

70 = 1
Try it: (x²)³ × x⁴. Show answer

Multiply exponents for the power of a power: x⁶. Then add exponents: x⁶ × x⁴ = x¹⁰.

STEP 06
What is not covered here?

This practice set intentionally omits the power-of-a-quotient rule.
